Not deterred, we decided to make for Audierne for our 2nd night. According to Tomasina (our affectionately named TomTom sat nav - she has a female voice!), it was only going to take 1.5 hours so we would be there by lunchtime - no problem! We sauntered through the peaceful rural Brittany countryside. The sun was shining, the roads were empty - (apart from the occasional tractor and herd of cattle), and we thought retirement? Bring it on!
We arrived at Audierne at lunch time - a pretty but busy little port. We looked in vain for the 'Place de General de Gaule' and before we knew it we were exiting the town!
'We need to turn around' the navigator instructs the driver. The driver duly turns into the next road ready to execute a 5 point turn! Well Cassie is a bit bigger than the peugeot! When 'Zut Alors!' It is a one way street! So we continue down said street - but the pretty and ancient stone walls are drawing ever closer to the van.
'You'll have to back out' says the navigator.
'******!' Says the driver
The residents of the pretty stone cottages hear the van and come out to see the 'show' and give well meaning advice. The wing mirrors are drawn in and the words 'rat trap' spring to mind - or maybe 'Cassie trap'. Put it this way, it was akin to squeezing through the stone pillars at the end of Elberry lane- but the pillars stretched for an interminable distance! I decided to take advantage of the curiousity of the on-lookers by asking for directions. But to our concern they had never heard of the Place, however they happily re-directed us back to the centre-Ville. Then the nightmare continued ... Imagine trying to negotiate the steep hairpin bends in Brixham in a motor home- and you"ve got it! The final straw came when one of the rear wheels was swallowed up by the mother of all pot holes with an almighty crash, scraping the underside of poor Cassie! Sob, sob!
So about an hour later we finally made it back to the town centre where the tourist information helpfully gave me a map with the directions to the Aire and then told us that it would be full because there was a festival on! She did however suggest an alternative further along the coast.
Sounds like you're having great fun! lol! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat is an "Aire"? Is it a wild camping place?
